Masterpiece in a Day Returns with New Features in 2010

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18
Where: Murphy Art Center, 1043 Virginia Ave.
Info: (317) 450-6630
Cost: Free for participants and visitors

The long-running free art and writing contest Masterpiece in a Day, operated by the nonprofit arts organization Big Car and supported by Southeast Neighborhood Development, the Fountain Square Merchants Association and Second Story, returns to Fountain Square on Sept. 18.

This year, the contest is again part of a big day in the neighborhood that includes the Fountain Square Art Fair and live entertainment presented by the Fountain Square Merchants Association. A new feature for Masterpiece's 16th year is an art parade throughout the neighborhood presented by the Fountain Square Arts Council. The parade starts after the artists' and writers' work is turned in for judging. A parade-entry category has been added to the competition. Also new this year is a youth writing contest organized by Second Story, a nonprofit literary organization based in Fountain Square.

The art and writing contests begin at 9 a.m. with day-of registration ending at 11 a.m. Completed artwork and typed copies of writing are due for judging at 3:30 p.m. Winners from both contests will be announced at about 5 p.m. All work must be completed in the Fountain Square neighborhood during contest hours. And people can only enter one competition.

Prizes in this year's art competition go to five winners as chosen by a panel of judges. Best of show gets $1,500 and four others will receive $500. In the Second Story writing contest for adults, the first-place winner receives $500, second $200 and third $100. Young writers will receive gift certificates and prizes for participating. Winning artwork and writing will also be displayed in the Murphy Art Center during the October First Friday.

This year's art judges include Jason Myers of ARTBOX Gallery, Paula Katz of Herron Gallery and Jeremy Efroymson of the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Second Story board members and teaching artists will judge the writing contests.

As a 501c3 grassroots nonprofit arts organization, Big Car provokes new artistic ideas and initiatives that strengthen communities. As part of that mission, Big Car has operated Masterpiece in a Day -- which has never charged an entry fee or ticket price -- in Fountain Square since the organization formed there in 2004.

Strange Colors is a High Definition film by Indianapolis native Seth Andrews that showcases the underground and often forgotten subculture of aggressive Inline skating in Indiana. For three long years a small group of enthusiasts risked life and limb to document and share their love of what they do. Featuring stunning visuals and a diverse soundtrack from bands like Jookabox and Stationary Odyssey, Strange Colors will take you on a visual and audible journey.

This is Andrew's Fourth and final "Skate Film" and only the second ever to be on Blu-Ray Disc. Come on out and see what you've been missing! For more information please visit www.indianainline.com.

In Boxcar: Meditations on Strange Fruit

LaShawnda Crowe Storm is an accidental artist that discovered the world of art after a cross-country hiking journey of personal discovery. During this adventure she examined which path her life should take – art or social services. While she may have chosen the arts, her work continues to be impacted by social justice concerns, both historically and currently.

"For me art is my form of 'social work' and I use it to open doorways to community dialog, which is the first step to healing, which in itself leads to wider social change." Exploring topics such as suicide, misogyny, lynching and slavery, she explores the ramifications of these issues on a broader socio-historical scale, as well as incorporates community-based aspects to the projects, traditional African spiritual practices and black American folklore.

Crowe Storm received her MFA in Sculpture from the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004, and has had work exhibited widely, including in Collaborative Vision Exhibition at Indiana State University in Fall 2009. She has also won numerous awards for both art and community service.

Kick is a short film by Chicago-based experimental filmmaker Clara Alcott. A science fiction melodrama with a feminine kick, the film deals with two women who, despite being strangers, have the same therapist, a mutual anxiety about technology, and a psychic connection.

A visual and sonic experience, Kick utilizes the colors of traditional 1950s technicolor filmmaking along with a contemporary electronic score and experimental sound design. Douglas Sirk, the architect of 1950s Hollywood melodrama created a lush genre to experiment with. Shot on mini-dv, Kick works within as well as customizes the genre for a contemporary story and theme. The set dressing, wardrobe and cinematography comprise a warm and vibrant palate for the setting of the film. To enhance the element of apprehension with machines an electronic sound design runs throughout the film. Composer Marc Riordan's score is a mixture of a classic Hollywood drama score but with touches of horror and science-fiction accents. Todd Carter of the laptop group TV Pow, engineered and mixed the piece as well as provided the sound design. The half-hour film will be proceeded by a short film program of works that reflect the theme of the film.

Although painted over 500 years ago, Hieronymus Bosch's triptych THE GARDEN of EARTHLY DELIGHTS has lost none of its allure, beauty or ambiguity. Theories attempting to illuminate its hermetic iconography abound yet noone seems to have been able to definitively pin down what exactly the artist is attempting to do in the painting or why. Is it a visual representation of the alchemical process? a cautionary depiction of the dangers of the flesh or just the opposite: a voyeuristic revel extolling the pleasures (and consequent dangers) of free love? Regardless of original intention, the painting functions as a mirror of the viewer: we take away from it what we wish to see and it becomes many things to many people.

With this in mind, REPLANTING the GARDEN brings together the works of over 40 artists and craftsmen from all over the country who were simply given the directive to create a piece in direct response to Bosch's greatest work.
Big Car has created an experimental twist on musical competitions with Thrift Store Music happening at Central Library later this month as part of the Made for Each Other series of interactive, community-building programs.

On April 28, 14 teams drew random thrift stores where they'll shop for the instruments used to create original songs. Limited to budgets of $25, teams will likely be challenged to get creative in choosing items to play. Maybe they'll get lucky and find an old Casio keyboard or out-of-tune toy guitar. Or maybe they'll find no regular instruments and have to bang on glass jars or shake baby rattles. Either way, the musicians will take a few days to write new songs and then perform them in 10-minute sets at Central Library on May 2. Winners will be chosen that day -- with prizes going to top performers. Winning teams will receive gift cards from Goodwill and prizes from LUNA Music and Asthmatic Kitty.

Big Car has created an experimental twist on musical competitions with Thrift Store Music happening at Central Library later this month as part of the Made for Each Other series of interactive, community-building programs.

On April 28, teams will draw random thrift stores where they'll shop for the instruments used to create original songs.

Interested bands or individual musicians must be present on April 28 at 7 p.m. to draw their thrift stores. Single musicians will be randomly paired to form teams as needed. Bands can have up to four members with a minimum of two. The competition is limited to 10 bands. Neutral music experts from the community will serve as judges with audience vote factoring into the final tally to choose winners on May 2.

IT IS FINE! EVERYTHING IS FINE:
An Evening with Crispin Hellion Glover

Actor/director Crispin Glover comes to the IMA to present the nerve-jangling strangeness of It is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE (2007, 74 mins., dirs. Crispin Glover and David Brothers), a cocktail of horror, exploitation and poignancy. Paul Baker (Steven C. Stewart, who also wrote the script) is a murderous middle-aged man with cerebral palsy and a plethora of psycho-sexual fantasies and fetishes. Laura Kern of The New York Times called the film "wildly impassioned and macabrely fascinating." Shown in 35 mm.

Prior to the film, Glover performs a one hour dramatic narration of eight profusely illustrated books known as The Big Slide Show. After the presentations, he will answer questions and sign books.

Co-presented by Big Car and the Indianapolis International Film Festival.

7 p.m. on Saturday, April 24
IMA Tobias Theater
4000 N Michigan Rd.

Intermedia Music Festival at Central Library April 23-25

The Intermedia Festival is a unique and futuristic series of concerts and events highlighting telematic and media arts performed by artists throughout North America and Europe. Telematic art synthesizes live traditional performing arts with computers, media and telecommunications. While more than 100 performers will travel to Indianapolis, others will participate through the Internet interactively with collaborators at the festival. Big Car is a supporter of the festival.

The Festival will present 10 concerts between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, April 23-25. There will be additional installations, presentations and exhibits. Live dancers, musicians, laptop ensembles, computer artists, actors, videographers, scientific presentation, commentary and discussion will come together to create a provocative and compelling set of experiences. Noted guest artists featured at the Festival will include San Francisco-based singer Pamela Z, New York composer and computer artist Luke Dubois, singer Bora Yoon, eco-acoustic composer Matthew Burtner, and Indianapolis-based electro-acoustic ensemble Big Robot. The Friday evening opening concert will feature Pamela Z followed by a modern dance concert featuring Indianapolis-based Dance Kaleidoscope with other performers and media onstage and online from Florida State University. A complete schedule, including screenings, installations, lectures and concerts is located on the Intermedia Festival website.

in the gallery: the pLopLop show

A selection of paintings, drawings, ephemera, objects found and transformed, flyers, posters, and documentary video clips culled from the archives of John Clark, the inventor of pLopLop opened April 2. Inspired by dada, surrealism and fluxus activity, pLopLop started life as an experimental arts and literary zine nearly 20 years ago. pLopLop grew beyond publishing to encompass live performance, video experiments, multimedia installations and visual art innovations based on collaboration and transformation.

The pLopLop show at Big Car gallery reflects the ongoing experimental and collaborative energies of the inventor of the zine -- and pLopLop's influences, contributors and fellow DIY pioneers as we work together to explore and transform the rugged terrain of an increasingly homogenized world. pLopLop #12 was released to coincide with the opening and is available to purchase for $5. Learn more at www.ploplopzine.org. The show runs through April 17.

Up Next in May: Replanting the Garden Group Show

May 7, 6-11 p.m. as part of IDADA's First Friday Gallery Tour.

With this in mind, REPLANTING the GARDEN brings together the works of over 40 artists and craftsmen from all over the country who were simply given the directive to create a piece in direct response to Bosch's greatest work.

in April: the pLopLop show

A selection of paintings, drawings, ephemera, objects found and transformed, flyers, posters, and documentary video clips culled from the archives of John Clark, the inventor of pLopLop will open at Big Car Gallery April 2 at 6 p.m. Music by Normanoak and Pharm Accident that night will start at 9:30 p.m.

Inspired by dada, surrealism and fluxus activity, pLopLop started life as an experimental arts and literary zine nearly 20 years ago. pLopLop grew beyond publishing to encompass live performance, video experiments, multimedia installations and visual art innovations based on collaboration and transformation.

The pLopLop show at Big Car gallery reflects the ongoing experimental and collaborative energies of the inventor of the zine -- and pLopLop's influences, contributors and fellow DIY pioneers as we work together to explore and transform the rugged terrain of an increasingly homogenized world. pLopLop #12 will be released to coincide with the opening and available to purchase for $5.

Learn more at www.ploplopzine.org.

The show runs through April 17.

In the gallery now: Magical Wonderfulness

After a tough break up, Indianapolis based artist NERS set out on his own and headed West. From this trip he produced Magical Wonderfulness, a series of drawings currently at Big Car. The imagery from the show was inspired by the dramatically different landscapes, flora, fauna, and culture of the American West that he experienced during his recent travels. The show runs through March 20, with business hours Thursday-Saturday 11-6.
