Cincinnati outsider artist Antonio Adams brings his unique vision to Big Car Gallery with "Negative Into Positive," a solo show of new paintings and sculptures.

Adams' work in this show is about taking untimely deaths -- like the murders of Jon Benet Ramsay and John Lennon -- and using art to shine light on the darkness. "I bring these people back to their new life form. Focus on the positive things instead of negative things," Adams said. "We can make the positive happen in this world. I'm showing you how. We've got to go back in time to face all those problems, know the truth, learn about those mistakes, and fix things that have been broken."

Born in Cincinnati in 1981, Antonio Adams has been drawing, painting and creating since he was child. Now his work is shown and collected across America. Adams is one of the co-founders of Visionaries & Voices, an arts organization for artists with disabilities in Cincinnati. He was part of the Visionaries & Voices group show at Big Car Gallery in August of 2007.

On May 17, Asthmatic Kitty Records will screen Tendrils, a visual exploration by director Mia Ferm of the people that surround and compose Castanets, featuring covers of Castanets songs by Phosphorescent, Dirty Projectors, Osso, and Vanishing Voice. DVD releases in stores on May 20.

Tendrils began as a simple search for a music video from Castanets most recent record, In the Vines. But it didn't take long for Castanets frontman Ray Raposa and label project manager Michael Kaufmann to abandon the notion of designing a YouTube friendly vignette. If Raposa's above statement is true, why then create a video that seemed to suggest otherwise, one that would become the visually determinate version? Instead, Raposa and Kaufmann decided to create a document that subverted the authority of the original by soliciting new takes and approaches on songs from Vines. They also wanted to create a document that would serve as a snapshot of a particular moment in time surrounding Raposa and Castanets, one that seems to employ both a high return-rate and turnover in the band's composition.

The result is a meditative reflection on the mesmerizing motion of water, the beauty of natural light, and the spontaneity of friends. Responding to the thickness of the songs on In The Vines, here the songs are stripped bare and presented by new voices that further reveal the lyrical beauty of Raposa's songwriting. The document is also a portrait of the community of friends and acquaintances that reside in close proximity to Raposa and the music of Castanets. This community inhabits a Brooklyn that is portrayed here in all its strange, gritty, rural paradox. It is equal parts home movie (ala Jonas Mekas), Downtown 81, Pull My Daisy, and audio-visual collage.

"Get Permanent Result"
*an exhibition of new work from jinjonjim art
opening reception:
June 6, 6-11 p.m.

jinjonjim art is a Bloomington-based art collective. It is made up of three artists: Crab Jackson, Jeremy Kennedy, and Shane Edge.

The title "jinjonjim" is a group identifier for collaborative art between any or all of the three members, as well as solo works. It is also used as a brand name for "products" designed by the group, the name of a mock design agency, and is generally referenced by any of the three members, for any project, whenever they see fit.

Jackson, Kennedy, and Edge began working together while attending high school. They formed bands, made experimental audio recordings, did absurd and destructive performances and videos, etc. Upon moving to Bloomington in 1998, the trio soon added visual art to their list of outlets. One by one, they began making and exhibiting work as individual artists. After years of sharing ideas and watching each other develop their techniques, the jinjonjim collective came about naturally. Their brand of abstract humor is also a key element, and has always been a common ground between the three. All living in the same neighborhood made these collaborations even easier.

Much of the jinjonjim work manifests itself on the 2-D visual level. A natural choice, seeing as how the body of all three artists' solo careers is painting and drawing. These collaborative canvases draw directly from each artists individual styles, and create scenes where they coexist.

Jijonjim also works off the canvas: designing absurd products, modifying pre-existing objects, and turning inside jokes into something much bigger.

For this latest exhibition "Get Permanent Result", jinjonjim art has created a collection of all new work for Big Car Gallery. Collaborative paintings on medium-large sized canvases, solo pieces in a variety of mediums from all three of the artists, reworked items from the jinjonjim archives, as well as some humorous and surprising oddities will be on display. Musical performances for the evening, will be programmed by jinjonjim art, and will feature: Normanoak, Caethua and Vollmar.

Check out jinjonjim art online: at www.jinjonjim.com.

Yes, they hang great art on the walls, but they also host poetry readings, multimedia performances, concerts by alternative acts from Indy and across the country and film screenings.
Fantastic First Friday

CLOP SHIT CLOP: PAINTINGS OF PAINTINGS
The work of Tom Morrill and Julia Bland

First Friday, March 7
6 p.m. to Midnight
Admission: free

The Rhode Island School of Design seniors Julia Bland and Tom Morrill make their first trip to Indiana exhibiting, CLOP SHIT CLOP: PAINTING OF PAINTINGS. The work includes film, textiles, paintings, prints and photography dealing with complexities of contemporary space and the multi media world that surrounds us.

Special coffee reception with the artists, Saturday March 8th, at 1pm, at Big Car Gallery.

Tom Morrill Goes French
By Andrew Mailliard
Driving through any suburban neighborhood on a Saturday morning, you are likely to see two things: ripped apart empty boxes of Bud Lite strung across the street, and a nearby group of trees covered in wild streams of toilet paper. In the early daylight, these objects are bittersweet, a testament to youthful abandonment and a reminder of someone's glorious night exploits between cheap beer and vandalism.
These objects left at the scene have a transient quality. They are artifacts, but their placement seems considered, and as toilet paper dances in the wind it gives a feeling of ethereal holiness. As the world awakens to find these pieces, life goes on around them, but as people pass, memories flow and eyes dance between the objects, wondering who, when, why, and wondering about the ifs and the buts. These objects are now part of the landscape, calling attention to their design and execution, even if on a temporary level.

Julia Bland
This body of work incorporates painting, textiles, and film, to explore the powerful and frustrating contemporary space, where the infinite complexity of networks and airwaves are brought to us as the simple sound of a voice on the other line or an image on a flat screen. These abstract spaces fluctuate from infinite and impenetrable to obstructed and flat, both inviting and confronting the viewer. Some remain on the surface and seem to expand endlessly beyond the edges of the rectangle, while others reach far back into a deep space within the picture plane, but are confined at their edges. The illusion in film, the tactility in textiles, and the physicality of the paintings, influence each other as the processes and imagery develop. The juxtaposition of these different mediums illustrates the different ways in which the physical manifestation of abstract concepts can shift and adjust with the nature of the materials used. These works highlight the importance of the conversation between this abstract concept and its visceral manifestation.

The Trials and Tribulations of Evelyn Masters

Show runs through Feb. 23, 2008
Gallery hours for the month
5-7 Fridays and 1-4 on Saturdays
The Trials and Tribulations of Evelyn Masters
A collection of drawings and prints by Audrey Patten

Big Car Gallery's February show features the first solo show by Audrey Patten. The Indianapolis-based artist will soon graduate from Herron School of Art. Patton's work is featured in the first issue Stretching Canvas, a national "low brow/ pop-surrealist" focused art magazine. This show of drawings, prints and installation is based on a fictional character of Patten's creation.

Show synopsis: The death of Evelyn Masters went unrecognized. She is succeeded by no one, and no one knows of her past. Left behind are the trivialities and trinkets of an old maid. Whatever we know about her are only the assumptions that we can make based on the portraits and snapshots on her walls; they tell the stories of her trials, her loves, her battles, her wins and losses. Evelyn lived secretly, and did so behind a mask as if to avoid exposing her desolation to the world around her. Yet it was this sorrow and seclusion that led to a revelation in Evelyn; a revelation that told her that the world was just as forlorn as she.

Read a review of the show on wthr.com here.

In Sidecar Gallery this month:

Works by John M. Ross will be on view in the Sidecar Gallery through Feb. 23. An exhibition of original drawings and digital prints,
works include figures, creatures and scenes that have evolved from
rough sketches into bold, graphic characters. Influenced by
contemporary art and design, as well as Japanese style, Ross's works
expertly combine the simple, expressive qualities of manga style with
his own iconography to create a body of unique work.

Ross attended the Herron School of Art, graduating in 1990 with a degree in Painting and Printmaking. He has worked as a museum professional in Indianapolis since 1991 and currently holds a position in the Registration Department at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

"Past the plains and the mountains and the mountains again..."

In September of 2006, photographers Jessie Freund and Justin Cain set out on a cross-country trip with musician and poet Neil Cain. With nothing but a few hundred dollars and hopes for what they'd find, the trip turned into a year-long journey into the mountains, the desert, the coast, and the bustling cities of the west. This exhibit chronicles the experience through the work of the three artists that lived it. :Past the Plains and the mountains and the mountains again..." is an opportunity to see and hear the landscapes, cityscapes, people and visions that became sources of great inspiration and freedom.

"Slownod: A Romantic Nightmare" by Andrew McGaha.

Check out pictures from the opening and other First Friday happenings here.

Stark, dark and eerie, this show combines photography and video to capture the mystery that veils our understanding of lovers, friends and family. Though dear to our hearts, what truly lies in their heart can never fully be known. The expressive capacity of the dream state transforms these waking life fears into perverse images of mangled people, broken thoughts and shattered desires. Tiptoeing the line between the conscious and unconscious mind, "Slownod" delivers a mix of strange relationships, amusing oddities, horror, death and love. A nightmare painted with love, desire and desperation, romanticizing the life and death of many relationships.

Open through Jan. 20 with hours Fridays 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 as well as by appointment. Call (317) 450-6630 to schedule a visit.

More big stuff in January

First Friday opening event: Jan. 4, 6 p.m. to midnight.

"Slownod: A Romantic Nightmare" by Andrew McGaha.
Music by Gentleman Caller at 9 p.m., free but donations accepted.

Mid-month acoustic music

7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan 11th: Lovely Houses, Brooks Ritter and Jascha. $5 suggested donation.

Special second art event in January:

Jan. 25 and 26th: 6-midnight Jessie Freund, Justin Cain and Neil Cain-Photo, video, poetry and music.

"Past the plains and the mountains and the mountains again…"

In September of 2006, photographers Jessie Freund and Justin Cain set out on a cross-country trip with musician and poet Neil Cain. With nothing but a few hundred dollars and hopes for what they'd find, the trip turned into a year-long journey into the mountains, the desert, the coast, and the bustling cities of the west. This exhibit chronicles the experience through the work of the three artists that lived it. "Past the Plains and the mountains and the mountains again…" is an opportunity to see and hear the landscapes, cityscapes, people and visions that became sources of great inspiration and freedom.

"Under the Weather: Paintings and Other Things"

Gallery hours: Fridays 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 and by appointment at (317) 450-6630.

Quote from the artists: Most of us believed, or at least hoped, the 21st century would be the dawn of something better. Those hopes, of course, have been sadly shattered, and, if anything, the world has become increasingly absurd. In essence, we are all "under the weather" and the only way to react is with equal absurdity, a little sadness, and a lot of shatter. This show goes directly to the root of this absurdity, without losing the sense of what it means to be completely absurd: a penchant for the nonsensical, with an eye cast toward the tragic. Watch out.
