Amexin Tamaliza 2019
June 22, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Saturday June 22, AMEXIN Tamaliza 2019 11am to 3 pm.
Tamales are not just something to eat — the harvesting, preparing and sharing of tamales is embedded in the history and culture of Mexico, on a family basis and on a community basis. The word “tamale” (meaning “wrapped food”) originates from the Nahuatl language spoken by the Aztecs. This free festival of tamales will highlight this history and tradition. The day will honor Mexican arts, music, dance, and food with:
+ A short presentation on the history and tradition of tamales
+ Music performances by Meztil-Cultural de Indianapolis and Yuri Rodriguez.
+ Dance performance & presentations by Grupo Folklorico Macehuani, a family band in the son juarocho style of music
+ Tamales for sale (tamale vendor will keep revenue from tamale sales)
+ Art activities
While enjoying AMEXIN Tamaliza, attendees can also see an exhibition of art by a Chicago-based Mexican-American visual artist, Yvette Mayorga (https://www.yvettemayorga.com/), on display at the Tube. Mayorga’s work examines the candy-coated idea of the American Dream and the risks all immigrants take. Our hope is that visitors will be inspired to express their own stories through creative channels. And enjoy some Mexican cultural traditions at the same time.
The event is made possible through the generous support of
The International Center‘s Festival Fund Grant. Gracias! 🙂
