In 2022, we worked with Hawthorne Community Center and New York-based placemaking organization, Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to build a new pocket park in the heart of Hawthorne’s campus (70 N. Mount Street) as part of the Clarity Parks Project™.
The Clarity Parks Project: Supporting Public Spaces for and by Young People
Thanks to PPS for technical and design support, expert help from our contractor, Health Outdoor, and project management support from Big Car, this previously underutilized outdoor space in the heart of Hawthorne Community Center’s campus is now an area for community gathering, socializing, sharing art, and enjoying small events. Complete with pergola, benches, picnic tables, and planting, the park features a pergola and a stage.
The Hawthorne Community Center Gathering Place opened October 28th, 2022 for the annual Hootenanny Fall Fiesta featuring music performance by Forgotten Tribe, food, drinks, and games. The space will be for the community to enjoy and use daily. The community center will also work with local artists to provide programming, movie nights, and other community events at the park.
